My own take on a classic party game

****Sending shout outs and big thank yous to Crystals Craft Spot, One Pretty Thing, Olivia Renn and Keeping it Simple for featuring my project!****

Update: Want to make your own?  Check out my tutorial here or under the tutorial tab at the top of the page.

Pin the tail on the Donkey...a classic party game.

Pin the candle on the cupcake?...a soon to be classic in this household and maybe yours too.

I gave you a little glimpse of this project here.  Did anyone guess right?

I never actually planned to make this game out of fabric.  When planning Lily's first birthday party I envisioned some disposable poster board type thing.  I'm not really sure how it evolved from paper to fabric but I'm glad it did.  I'm pretty happy with the results and it was simple to make.

Here are the deets:

  • It's made out of felt and some jumbo ric rac trim.
  • I made 10 candles and used a 2 inch strip of no sew sticky velcro on the backs.
  • The polka dots I drew freehand on freezer paper that were stenciled in with tulip soft fabric paint and the colors came in a pack called retro.  You had me at retro.  The purple and yellow paint were bought seperately.
  • I still have to figure out a way to hang it up because the packaging tape I used here just isn't going to cut it come party time.  I thought about making a pocket at the top and using a dowel and ribbon.  Or maybe grommets?  I'm just not sure how well they work in felt.  Any suggestions?

Should be a hit at Lily's party!!

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. This turned out so cute! I love it. I think I need one now, too! I think that a pocket and dowel might work best. Great job!

  4. Super cute candle on the cupcake idea! I love all the pretty colors and especially loooove jumbo ric rack! You are so creative! I would use a wooden dowel instead of grommets. They are a pain to use. Saw you on @Trendy Treehouse. Stop by if you get a chance:

  8. I love it! Great idea! If you backed it with cardboard or very thin plywood could you prop it up on an easel? I think a thin dowel would work if no one tries to swing from it. :)

Also, did you sew the cupcake to the pink background?

    Soooo cute!

  9. I love this! Such a great idea. I have a boy and a girl, so I'll have to think of something a little more unisex, but I definitely want to do something similar!
